Jesus in the City

The 2nd UK Urban Mission Congress

"Community Conflict and Celebration"

Belfast, 26-30 September 1998

Making a Difference in schools - Lee Jackson.

A school is for education not evangelism - but education can be evangelism! 98% of children go to school for 15,000 hours in their life! - its the best place to meet young people.

  • Schools have a legal duty to educate the children in moral and spiritual development -we therefore have a good opportunity to input. School are like cities - we will not impact every part of them. Be holistic - use sport, PSE, detached work and different sorts of Christian groups in school. Don't spend all your time in the classroom!
  • Be professional in your approach and delivery, be real with your doubts as well - we do not have all the answers!
  • Be 'issue' based in lessons - don't ever preach.
  • Jesus not church is what the kids need to hear. Be a long-term schools worker - don't hit and run!
Feedback to congress.
  • Think holistic schools work - we can be involved in so much more than just RE lessons and assemblies.
  • Think long-term in schools and always network first. Find out what is happening there already.
  • Be professional and relational in school life. Talk about Jesus not church and definitely not denominations! Schools are open to Christians at the moment - take the opportunity now.
